Liberals have always maintained the position that they don’t want to confiscate everyone’s guns, but everyone knows that’s their eventual goal. Whenever someone says they don’t want your guns, just silently add the word “yet” to the end of what they say and that will be the truth. And now some Democrats in Georgia have finally admitted the truth. They want your guns.
Democrats in the Georgia state legislature introduced a bill banning “certain assault weapons, large-capacity magazines, armor-piercing bullets, and incendiary .50 caliber bullets.” Language in the bill also requires confiscation by the state.
Breitbart – The bill–HB 731–is sponsored by Mary Margaret Oliver (D-83rd), Stacey Abrams (D-89th), Carolyn Hugley (D-136th), Pat Gardiner (D-57th), Dar’shun Kendrick (D-93rd), Dee Dawkins-Haigler (D-91st).
According to the text of HB 731, the bill focuses on ” dangerous instrumentalities and practices” by prohibiting the “possession, sale, transport, distribution, or use of certain assault weapons, large capacity magazines, armor-piercing bullets, and incendiary .50 caliber bullets.” Moreover, the details punishment for crimes involving “the possession, sale, transport, distribution, or use of certain assault weapons, large capacity magazines, armor-piercing bullets, and incendiary .50 caliber bullets.”
It also “[designates] certain weaponry and ammunition as contraband and [requires] seizure of such by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.”
Representative Mary Margaret Oliver suggests 10 other representatives have joined the six original bill sponsors. An announcement posted to Oliver’s webpage says:
[Oliver] and fifteen Democrat women House members introduced HB 731 on the first day of the 2016 Session. The bill bans assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Georgia needs debate about these weapons which are only used for rapidly killing people. Assault weapons are not necessary for deer hunting.
Pro-Second Amendment group Georgia Carry responded to HB 731 by tweeting, “Dems finally honest about gun control, their ultimate goal is confiscation.”
Georgia State Representative Oliver has a blurb on her website about the bill which includes an often-used, tired, old liberal line about firearms.
“MMO and fifteen Democrat women House members introduced HB 731 on the first day of the 2016 Session. The bill bans assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Georgia needs debate about these weapons which are only used for rapidly killing people. Assault weapons are not necessary for deer hunting.”
“Assault weapons are not necessary for deer hunting.” Oh, how the liberals just love to use that argument! After a murderer shot and killed nine people at a Charleston church last year, White House press secretary Josh Earnest included that argument as part of his press briefing. “You don’t need an assault rifle to go hunting. It’s not part of your family heritage,” he said.
People who use such an argument are either ignorant of our nation’s history and the Constitution or they purposefully ignore the truth because it doesn’t fit the liberal narrative that guns are evil and no one should be allowed to have one. Never mind the fact that the Second Amendment was not written to protect people’s right to hunt. Never mind the fact that our nation’s Founders feared an oppressive government and wanted the people to maintain the ability to overthrow it. Never mind the fact that the very liberties which allow the leftists the right to spew their anti-gun venom were won and secured with the barrel of a gun. Never mind the facts; a requirement for liberalism to thrive.
An issue I don’t see addressed in this proposed bill is the problem of compensation. Is Oliver seriously proposing that the state confiscate personal property from its citizens without just compensation? Most people would consider that blatant thievery. If citizens are to be compensated for their confiscated weapons, who sets the price? Where will the funds come from? No, it seems clear that Oliver and her Democrat friends in the Georgia legislature would be just fine with banning the weapons specified, having them confiscated and destroyed and that would be the end of it.
Ms. Oliver might want to review our nation’s history to learn what happened the last time the ruling government put a plan in motion to confiscate firearms. It did not go well at all and those who were sent to seize the colonialists’ arms were met with violent resistance.
I lean toward thinking that Oliver & company don’t seriously believe this bill will make it out of committee or much less, be passed and signed by the Georgia governor. It’s just a publicity stunt and a way to pander to the gun-grabbers on the left. But kudos to Ms. Oliver for at least being an honest Democrat on this issue. The Democrats want your guns and here we finally see a few of them willing to admit the truth.
